Dr. Makoto Akashi, President of the Japanese Association for Radiation Accident/Disaster Medicine and a member of the Japan Health Physics Society, has worked in radiation emergency medicine for nearly 40 years at Japan's National Institute of Radiological Sciences. He led dose estimation and treatment during the 1999 Tokai-mura accident and advised on the Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident. In 2019, he received the Prime Minister Award for his contributions and for establishing Japan's nuclear disaster medical response framework.
