Professor Les Baillie PhD, Cardiff School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Redwood Building, King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff, UK.
Prior to moving to the US in 2002 to take up a position at the university of Maryland he served as the anthrax research lead at Dstl Porton Down (UK Ministry of Defence) where he focused on the development of recombinant Anthrax vaccines and monoclonal antibody based therapies. In 2003 he joined the US Navy’s Biological Defence Research Directorate where he led the medical countermeasures group with a particular focus on the development of next generation medical countermeasures.
In 2007 he returned to the UK to take up a post as a professor in the school of Pharmacy at Cardiff university. Since returning he has led a series of UK, US, EU and NATO funded anthrax projects, served on government CBRN advisory panels and is a subject matter expert for anthrax.
Current projects are exploring the impact of climate change on the evolution of B.anthracis, the use of bacteriophages as medical countermeasures and environmentally friendly decontaminants as well as the development of real time point of care assays for B.anthracis and M.tuberculosis.
