Ms. Joy Calayo is professor of Microbiology and Public Health at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Medical Technology and Biochemistry at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines. She is also the Chief Medical Technologist at the San Lazaro Hospital (SLH), National Referral Center for Infectious Diseases under the Department of Health. She is the point person for the SLH-Nagasaki University Research Collaboration laboratory.
She is currently the President of the Philippine Biosafety and Biosecurity Association, the national organization which has been instrumental in reaching out to numerous stakeholders in the biorisk spectrum through advocacies, symposia, workshops and trainings at the national level.
Prior her installation as President, she became a member of the Technical Working Group for the Department of Health National Standards in Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity (NLBB) since 2006 up to present. She was also formerly Bacteriologist III at the Philippine Orthopedic Center, Laboratory Department. She has a Master's degree in Medical
Technology obtained in 2009 and is currently pursuing her studies as Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences at the University of Santo Tomas.
In her talk, she will share the outcome of an nationwide assessment that deals with determining whether biosecurity education, bioethics and Dual Use Research are deeply inculcated in the scientists, academe and students involved in researches in the life sciences. The results of the study shall look for gaps as basis for future improvements.
