Col (R) Jaewoo Seong, Korea Arms Control Verification Agency
Col (R) Jaewoo Seong has served in a wide variety of command, leadership, and staff positions across multiple levels of the Army Logistics Command, the R.O.K. Army, the Combined Forces Command in Korea, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Special Forces Command under the CBRDC. Most recently, he served with the Korea Arms Control Verification Agency before retiring on 30 November 2025, completing 34 years of active-duty service in the R.O.K. Army.
As a Major, he was deployed to the Multi-National Division–North (U.S. 1st Armored Division) in Iraq. He developed and implemented a Response Action Model for Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear consequence management, which he presented to government agencies, local governments, and military decision-makers, contributing significantly to national and operational planning.
For three years prior to his retirement, he faithfully served as the head of the R.O.K.–U.S. Joint Study Working Group on the Disposal of Chemical UXO in cooperation with the U.S. CBARR. He also led the National Escort Team during domestic inspections conducted by international organizations to verify compliance with international regimes.
He has been awarded the Presidential Commendation and the Prime Minister’s Commendation, as well as commendations from the Minister of National Defense, the Chairman of the National Nuclear Safety Commission, and the Minister of Public Administration and Security, along with the U.S. Meritorious Service Medal.
His extensive knowledge, experience, and expertise in weapons of mass destruction and arms control verification have influenced military and government policy development. He is currently participating in research at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA).
