Dr Alemka Markotić
Dr. Markotic is the director of the Dr. Fran Mihaljevic University Hospital for Infectious Diseases and president of the Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences. An expert in the field of infectious diseases, she has dedicated her life to the study and treatment of pathogens. She holds professorships at faculties of medicine of both the University of Rijeka and Croatian Catholic University. Her extensive career includes experience with charitable medical work, vaccine quality control, virological and imunological research, hospital administration, and clinical work. She has greatly contributed to civil society through her work as physician in the Caritas’ war pharmacy and outpatient clinic and at Catholic Relief Services where she coordinated drug supply in refugee settlements in Croatia. Her fields of research include immunopathogenesis and molecular epidemiology and she has been certified for work in Biosafety Level 3 Laboratories and during the Covid-19 Pandemic she formed part of the Croatian National Crisis Management Team. She holds a PhD from the University of Sarajevo and the Zagreb Institute of Immunolony, specializing in clinical immunology.
